Patrick Dupond was born in Paris in March
of 1959. His father disappeared from his life very early, he
didn't know him. He wouldn't find him until much later, when
his mother decided one day to organize a meeting between the
two.
Patrick Dupond spent his childhood with his mother and her
companion, Lucien. Together, they led a simple, modest life.
Patrick learned about life in the streets with his friends,
exploring the neighborhood. Patrick was an impetuous child
and his mother had great difficulty getting him to calm down
and behave. As an outlet for his energy and a way to get Patrick
to come out of his shell, she cajoled him into sports and
signed him up for soccer, then karate. But tese activities
didn't seem to interest the young boy very much and he abandoned
them quickly.
Something clicked the day when Patrick was watching a dance
class. He was fascinated by the rhythm of the classical music
and the graceful, harmonious movements of the dancers' bodies.
It was decided, Patrick wanted to dance. He donned his first
slippers and was quickly noticed for his talent. Then, a meeting
would change the course of his life: Max Bozzoni, teach at
the Opera became his instructor. Immediately, he sensed that
this young boy had a future in the dance world and he took
charge of his career. Patrick Dupond progressed quickly and
dedicated himself to dance, but his lack of discipline is
noticed, and will create obstacles for him throughout his
career.
In 1970, Patrick Dupond entered the school of dance at the
Paris Opera. He worked hard to realize his dream: to become
a principal dancer and dance with the greats.
In 1976, he became world famous by winning the gold medal
as best dancer in
the world at the international competition in Varna, Bulgaria.
In 1980, he was finally named principal dancer and a brilliant
career, which would allow him to dance with everyone from
Rudolf Noureïev to Maurice Béjart and Alvin Ailey,
opens before him. His success didn't stop there. After being
named artistic director of the French ballet in Nancy in 1988,
he became dance director at the Paris Opera in 1990. He was
only 31 years old and would keep this position until 1995.
His career took a bad turn in 1997, when the directors of
the Opera decided to fire him for being absent for three days
of rehearsals in order to be a member of the Cannes Festival
jury. The dancer paid dearly for his insubordination and lack
of discipline, and despite his appeals to the arbitration
board, he failed to be reinstated. He entered a period of
doubt and solitude. He felt disliked and rejected by the dance
world, he thought he was a victim of his success, which did
not please everyone.
He was still in this dark period in January of 2000 when Patrick
Dupond was the victim of a serious accident which nearly cost
him his life. He survived, but with multiple injuries which
force him to struggle against himself to relearn how to live,
and especially, how to dance. It was his former teacher, Max
Bozzoni, who patiently taught him to train again. Through
willpower and courage, Patrick Dupond is today able to get
back on stage to seduce and enchant his audience, which despite
his
disappointments, never abandoned him.
